A Walk To the Post Office and a Skipped Bike Ride

Page content

Yesterday I went for two walks. The first walk was after lunch because I had something to drop off at the post office. Usually I would have printed the label at home, rather than doing this walk. I desired to go for a bike ride but the chore was more important. In the process I learned something.

If you need to print something, you can go to the post office, and via an app you can print the label for a package there and then. You can then send the package, without dealing with a person. It’s quick and efficient. It’s thanks to speaking with a person that I learned this.

It’s not often that I walk with a post package over three or four kilometres. Usually a normal person would get in the car, and drop it off after walking a grand total of two hundred meters or less.

I needed my daily walk, but I also walked further than I had to because there was a queue at the first post office and I didn’t want to wait. In the end the wait was quick, once I actually stood still in the post office long enough to be served.

It’s nice, to walk, rather than to take the car. It’s nice not to use a vehicle. It’s also convenient to have the stamina to walk to the post office, in town, without thinking anyything of it.

The Nocturnal Walk

After my afternoon walk I had dinner, watched TV and then considered whether I would skip the pub crawl or not. I should have skipped it. I don’t get pleasure from going out to bars and clubs like I used to.

I walked to Nyon, went into the second bar of the pub crawl, felt uncomfortable, and then went for a walk by the lake. I looked at the clear waters and noticed what looked like krill feeding by the surface. I then walked further along the lake front.

During this walk I was struck by how light the sky was. The full moon has an impact on how clearly we can see. It had me thinking that the full moon would be a great opportunity for a bike ride. In such conditions we can see way beyond what the lights illuminate, and should also be easier to see, as long as we don’t go through wooded areas.

The conditions were pleasant for a nocturnal walk despite not being over-enthusiastic about being in bars.

The Missed Bike Ride

I have an alarm that wakes at 07:30 every single day, whether I need to get up. I think it went off today but I went straight back to sleep. I woke at 08:30 and still had two hours to get ready for this morning’s bike ride. I didn’t get up though.

I want to go for a group ride, but I don’t want to push myself out of my comfort zone. I want to enjoy the ride and if I get three quarters of the way through the ride and find myself in a state of exhaustion then it isn’t fun. At this time of year the cycle gets you tired, but so does the weather.

If I had not walked over eighteen kilometres yesterday, and if I had not woken feeling tired, then I would have gone for today’s bike ride. As I write this, it’s raining, so I don’t know how pleasant the ride would have been.

And Finally

My entire rational for wanting to lead a relaxed cycle group is to avoid having to ride hard and fast. I like to push myself, but I also like to be able to slow down once I get tired. My legs are tired from yesterday’s walks. A calm ride is fun.

Finally Recovered

There is also the small matter that yesterday, for the first time since my cold, and double vaccination, I feel healthy, and that’s a great feeling. I want to keep that feeling. That’s why I wasn’t so keen about going indoors, but also why I don’t want to over-exert myself today.
